For Martin Diedrich, founder of Kéan Coffee™, great coffee has been part of the family for several generations. As coffee farm owners for much of the last century, the Diedrich family developed a deep, intuitive understanding of coffee. Today Martin is considered to be one of the pioneers of the coffeehouse movement in the United States and is known internationally as a coffee expert.
The Diedrich family began California operations in 1972 by importing, roasting, and retailing coffee from their family farm in Guatemala. Martin’s father Carl was roasting his coffee on a roaster that he had designed and built with his own hands, and from 1972 to 1982, Carl would drive his 1962 Volkswagen microbus the 3000 mile round trip from Orange County to Guatemala and back several times a year. By 1982, Carl and his coffee had already become legendary in Orange County.
In 1983, Martin Diedrich began taking over the retail, roasting, and importing facets of the family business. Martin founded the first Diedrich Coffee, a neighborhood coffeehouse, in 1984. The popularity of Diedrich Coffee led to expansion, which eventually brought the company to the point of being publicly traded and having hundreds of coffeehouse locations. But in 2004, Martin parted ways with corporate life to return to his roots as a small micro-roaster and independent coffeehouse operator. Martin and his wife Karen became business partners, and named Kéan Coffee after their only son. Kean Coffee represents a return to the roots of the original family business - coffee, quality, and community. With Kéan Coffee, the Diedrich family coffee legacy continues.
Kéan Coffee currently has two thriving coffeehouse locations in Orange County- Newport Beach, and Tustin. Each coffeehouse artisan roasts all of its coffee onsite. The coffeehouses also feature fresh pastries from local artisan bakeries (including Golden Foodie Awards two time winner, Chef Rachel Klemek of Blackmarket Bakery) as well as the finest quality loose leaf teas, chocolate beverages, local artisan made ice cream, and other fine foodie indulgences. Kéan Coffee also has a wholesale roastery in Costa Mesa, with a growing list of wholesale clients from restaurants and cafes to private companies, as well as retailers such as Whole Foods markets. From its beginnings in 2005, Kéan Coffee has operated as a sustainable, environmentally responsible business, setting an example for many others to follow.
At Kéan Coffee, coffee is elevated to its highest potential. Martin Diedrich cups hundreds of samples of green coffee throughout the year from small farms in the premium coffee growing regions of the world before he settles on the small handful of green coffees he deems worthy of roasting for Kéan Coffee. Then he roasts them to perfection, bringing out the best qualities of each coffee so that the complex flavors and subtle notes of each coffee can be enjoyed to their fullest. When you savor a cup of coffee roasted by Kéan Coffee, you are experiencing coffee that has been expertly roasted within a few days or even hours of the time it reached your lips. Once you experience it, the taste superiority is undeniable. Kéan Coffee takes the coffee experience to the next level.
